- Many jobs require you to have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check
- This especially true if you want to work with money, patients, sensitive data or children
- CRB checks will be started by an agency or employer before they hire you, but you can sometimes start work before the result arrives
- You cannot run a CRB check yourself, but you can be given the result to keep
- Each new employer should repeat the process for their own security
- There is a cost, about £35 ($60or 50 Euros), but you may not have to pay it yourself
- The 'full disclosure' CRB check looks for any criminal records in the UK, and you may have to have the check even if you say you have only just arrived here
- Further checks may be made by employers with foreign police in any place where you appear to have lived or visited
- Sometimes blacklists are consulted, especially for teachers and doctors
- You have to declare everything truthfully, including names and addresses as well as any criminal record you have, or there may be serious consequences
