The EDUCATION SYSTEM:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know. But click on the links below and we'll try.

There are several points to remember:

  • The UK has both state and private education systems (the latter is sometimes, curiously, referred to as its 'public' schools)
  • Until any child is 19 they are promised a free place within the state system
  • Attendance at school from 5 to 16 is compulsory
  • Before the age of 5, nursery school places are available
  • You can approach any school and ask them to take your child, but they may say 'no'
  • Extra help with English will be provided if the child needs it, and likewise help with English is available for adults
  • Single parents will find that they are offered additional support
  • Several systems operate to stop child-on-child bullying and adult-on-child abuse
  • Interpreters will be available if you need to speak with a school and have poor English
  • Any child who is disabled or has learning or behavioural problems will be given special provision
