EMBASSIES and CONSULATES:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know. But click on the links below and we'll try.

These are perhaps the useful things to remember:

  • We have provided a list of contact details for consulates and embassies in the UK
  • If you have a serious problem and need help they will advise you
  • In an emergency they will get you back home, free, but they may take your passport off you if you have been irresponsible!
  • Emergencies when they will happily help you with emergency repatriation - sending you home at no cost - will include the death of a family member
  • They will get you a translator or interpreter to help you if you are in trouble, with the police or authorities, and this may be provided free of charge
  • They will provide a list of solicitors who speak your language, and often this list will tell you what kind of work they specialise in (everything from dealing with houses to serious crime)
  • Usually consulates and embassies will send somebody to see you if you are being held by the police or if you are in prison
  • Usually diplomats will not interfere in the processes of the UK or any other country where they are guests
  • Some embassies and consulates have telephone numbers which will be expensive to call, and they will keep you waiting. But if you are in trouble, with the police for example, then they will have to make those calls for you and at their own cost
  • Embassies and consulates also provide other services, including lists of companies from your own country which might be able to offer you work. Usually you should ask for the Commercial Attaché
