ACCOMMODATION:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know. But click on the links below and we'll try.

There are a few important points to make:

  • Despite a general shortage of housing in the UK, you will be able to find accommodation
  • Very often an employer will assist you by providing accommodation, which should be suitable, clean, safe, and provided at a fair rent
  • You should have a contract, and keep a copy of it
  • There is an environmental health department and a fair rent tribunal if you need help. You do not need to suffer in silence if you are treated badly!
  • The local authority may help you find accommodation if you have children to look after
  • Any deposit should not be given to the landlord directly. There is a 3rd party system to hold the deposit. Use it!
  • Almost every adult in the UK must pay Council Tax, which is payable as residents for every property, and typically this will be several hundred pounds per person per year. It can be paid on a monthly basis. The money is used to provide local services.
  • You will also, almost certainly, have to pay for water and sewerage (taking away waste materials)
  • You will have to pay to use a television
  • It is always useful to ask the help and advice of local people who are from your own country and speak your language!
