ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING and INTERPRETERS:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know. But click on the links below and we'll try.

The important points to remember are:

  • The UK 's official language is English. Many people can learn enough English in a month for them to survive. It's really easy and uses words from many languages including your own!
  • In the UK a few natives also speak Welsh (in Wales) and Gaelic (in both Ireland and Scotland)
  • Being able to speak English, even if it is not perfect, is good for you and for your children - socially, for work, education and safety
  • Some employers, and people organising courses, will need to test your English
  • The British Council recommends the International English Language Test System (IELTS)
  • The IELTS website is at www.ielts.org
  • There will be a test fee. You may find a 3rd party will pay this for you
  • Translators work with the written word. Interpreters use the spoken word.
  • You can get help from interpreters and translators with Jobcentre Plus when looking for work or trying to claim benefits
  • You will be automatically given the help of an interpreter or translator if you get into trouble with the police, so you can explain yourself and understand what is happening
